"The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck" by Mark Manson

BOOK REVIEW: “The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck” by Mark Manson.

Quite an interesting read.  I love the upfront and honest approach on how to deal with life.  No corny exercises to do or telling yourself you are special.  This book isn’t trying to convince a person not to care about anything, but how to prioritize what one cares about.

In today’s world, it seems like we are constantly told what we should care about and why by outlets such as social media to one’s coworkers.

If you really want to live a good life, then you need to know what to truly care about.  You should care about what’s going on with your family, and not some celebrity or new car the neighbor bought.

This book emphasizes on how it’s alright to have negative feelings, anxiety, and guilt.  I really believe that if you are constantly trying to feel better all the time, the less happy you will become.

It’s ok to feel like crap and fail at something from time to time, just remember to try and learn from it.  Also, this book points out something I have experienced quite frequently in life, that sometimes when I just didn’t give a crap about something, I seemed to excel at it.

The reason for this was that I was so relaxed that I was able to concentrate on my target goal. I’m not suggesting that a person take this approach to everything in life.

Another important point that this book makes is that giving too many f*ck can be the result of having too much time on our hands.

The mind always finds something to worry about, and it is usually just something silly.  Technology has really allowed us to free up a lot of our time now, which can lead us to worry about useless stuff.

Like the book mentions, I don’t wish for a life with no problems nowadays, I wish for a life with good problems.  For example, relocating to a new country and making better money and raising my family in a better environment.

Sure there are problems like the time and cost and involved, but those are good problems.  I had never really looked at life like that until I picked up this book.

Probably the thing that had the most profound effect on me in this book was the topic about emotions.  I agree with what the author says about the design of emotions.

I believe that when you are feeling terrible, it’s your brain trying to send you a message that change is needed in your life.

I was tired of where I worked and lived.  I was always miserable.  It’s when I decided to take the hint that my brain was giving, and make the switch.  As a result, I am happier.  Of course with a new location and job comes new problems, but as mentioned earlier, these are good problems.

I could go on and on about this book, but one really has to read it for themselves to fully get the gist of it.  I loved it and found myself laughing out loud at times.

I enjoyed reading it so much I purchased the audible version too.  I highly recommend this book if you need a change in your life. You will not regret it.
