How to Declutter The Mess In Your Mind and Take Away the Feelings of Discomfort. – Guest Post by Yaniris


If I am being completely honest with you, I have been kind of scatterbrained lately. I have no clue if it’s due to the long hours that I put into my work each day or if It’s because I want to do so many things in the future, that choosing just one thing to focus on is creating stress.

Let me explain.

I am a 20-year-old college drop out. Yeah, I know right. Many people may think it’s just me being reckless, stupid and lazy to choose not to pursue a college career. But I don’t feel like I am any of those things, I just want something more to life than just being a little worker bee with a regular 9-5 job.

Now don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with going to college and pursuing a career you would really like, it’s just not for me. So one of the things that are floating around at the moment is;

What do I do now?

So I started working to have an income while I figure out what I am going to long term with my life. Although I feel like I have a grasp for what I would like to do, now it’s all about doing little things to reach that long-term goal.

Being scatterbrained has made it really hard to focus on what I need to complete for my long term goal. If I’m being SUPER ULTRA honest with you it makes me confused, it makes me feel like all the things that I have wanted to accomplish for a really long time, it isn’t what I want to do, which is totally not the case. I have no clue if that makes sense.

For Example.

You want to get a promotion at work. You come in early every day, leave late every night, and start reaching new quotas every month. Your Boss starts to take notice and assigns you new projects and gives you more responsibilities. This is what you wanted. But some days you wake up and you start thinking about what you have to do for the day and it kind of freaks you out.

You feel lazy, you feel confused, and you don’t know where to start. You’re not anxious, you’re not depressed. You just feel foggy.

You feel like a million things are racing through your brain and you don’t know why.

You feel like you need a momentary break, but you have so much to do, it’s just not possible to take the day off whenever you feel these rush of emotions.

The feeling of being disorganized, confused and lacking concentration is the act of being scatterbrained. You want this goal so bad that it feels like so much on your brain that you can’t concentrate on that goal anymore. And that’s a problem, you want this.

What do I do when I feel this way?

Well, I do the thing that’s the hardest for me to do at that moment.

I think.

I think about where I am, and what I want to do. I think about what I need to do now, and leave other things for later. I think in parts. Because thinking is your worse enemy right now.

So now that we’re scatterbrained together let’s grab a pen and a piece of paper, lets un-scatter our brain.

Where are you right now?

I know, why does this have any significance to what I am feeling? I just want you to feel grounded. So the first thing I want you to do is to write where you are…here I’ll start first. I am at my local Panera Bread.

What do your surroundings look and sound like?

It’s Loud, there’s a lot of people here. I am sitting in an empty booth, trying to type on my computer. I have my headphones on listening to calming music.

What did I do today?

I woke up, and I immediately felt like I couldn’t deal with the rest of the day. So I started focusing on what I needed to get done today, and still haven’t done it. Now I am stalling by writing.

This question is particularly important. Try to make yourself feel grounded by asking yourself this question every day. When you start listing the things you have done it will help as a base for the things that you have to do, or make you realize that you need to start doing more.

What do I need to get done today?

Now depending on how scatterbrained you are this might feel like a lot, but just focus on what you need to get done today. Not about how much time it would take, just the main things. What I like to do is put thing into lists. Yeah, I am a HUGE list person, it will Usually look like this. (This list is purely for example purposes; this is not what I have to do today)

            1. Computer Work

                        * open and answer emails

                        * Start invoices

                        * draft next week’s newsletter

Now I don’t work in an office so I wouldn’t know the order of Importance, but you get the gist, right? The list above states what you have to do, but then it goes in-depth in like little sub-categories so you know what you need to get done.

What is my ultimate goal for the day?

What is the number one goal today? Is it to get that paper done for school? Or clean a part of your basement? Anything can be part of your ultimate goal for the day.

This is the only thing on the list above if you complete, you’ll feel some sort of accomplishment. What I like to do is write the ultimate work-related goal I have to do that day, and then a personal goal that I strive for myself every day.

What is my overall goal?

This is where we revisit the same long term goal. I write this down every single time I feel scatterbrained because it reminds me that everything that I have done and has to do it for a reason.

I know that It seems impossible right now to concentrate. But once you really connect with yourself on an emotional level, and are made hyper aware of the little things that you do and how you feel, asking yourself these questions becomes really beneficial.

I always carry around my journal and write little notes about how I feel at certain moments, along with my daily writing regimen to make me feel grounded.
